• Balabag: A documentary film on illegal mining in Zamboanga del Sur

Balabag: A documentary film on illegal mining in Zamboanga del Sur The illegal gold mining activities in the sleepy town of Bayog in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Sur have been going on for the past 15 years. Small scale miners have illegally claimed hundreds of hectares of lands in Balabag in the mountain village of Depore and since then have caused tremendous environment pollution. The illegal miners used cyanide and nitric acid and other hazardous chemicals including mercury to process gold. And despite these problems, Filipino authorities are hapless in putting a stop to illegal mining in Bayog where miners blasted their way through tunnels with improvised explosives. Many laborers and miners had died from landslides and collapsed tunnels, but the greed over the ...

Desperate men and children scour underwater mine-shafts in this terrifying report. Breathing through nothing more than a thin pipe connected to an air compressor, going 30 foot deep underwater for hours in search of gold is all in a day’s work for 16-year-old Gerald. "I'm afraid, if the earth collapses, I will get buried underneath" says the teenager. Surrounded by rock walls in the pitch black darkness of the water, the men chip away at walls for 3 hours. They find no gold. For many like Gerald school is a distant memory, and illegally diving for gold the only alternative to starvation. Hundreds of deaths by electrocution, drowning and even the possibility of Mercury poisoning have had little impact on compressor mining activities, which continue un-policed and unregulated. There appears little hope of change on the horizon. "If I could only give job opportunities - I will take them away from compressor mining. It is just that I have no alternative at this point" says Ricarte Padilla, Mayor of Jose Panganiban - Philippines' so-called "Gold Coast". As it is, the children and family men unearthing 60-80kg of gold per month see the lions share of wealth disappear into the Chinese black market. The kind of spectacular wealth that Australia's Western Mining Corporation are looking forward to harvesting. Yet the land is also ancestral land, home of the spirits of trees and rivers. The company have been quick to quiet locals' fears. New community centres, houses and health clinics have sprung-up as a sign of the prosperity the mine could spread. They've even signed an agreement with local leaders in support of the mine. But many are changing their minds. It's well understood here that in the past troops have protected logging and other businesses against tribal hostilities. And they're turning to rebel groups to ready themselves for a fight. The Moro Islamic Liberation Front are strong in Mindanao. We watch them training in full military regalia with plenty of firepower. Al Haj Murad is the guerrilla's military leader. When locals speak, he listens...and he doesn't like what he hears about the WMC. It seems there is a real chance the company's presence here could re-ignite violence. Tagalog/Nat Tribespeople protesting what they call the destruction of their ancestral lands by mining companies in the Philippines, shaved their heads on Friday during a demonstration in Manila. Four women and around two dozen men went under the razor to underline their demand for the government to put a stop to the deforestation of mountains in Benguet, Cagayan. SUGGESTED VOICE-OVER Outside the Department of Environment and Natural Resources office in Manila, some unexpected visitors. About a hundred tribespeople from the mountains of Benguet, Cagayan, and the island of Mindanao gathered to protest the deforestation of their ancestral lands by mining companies. The demonstration began with a tribal dance just outside the entrance to the building. Other protesters held banners calling for a halt in large-scale mining. In a statement, the protesters said large-scale mining was denuding the primary forests of the mountains. They say this cuts off sources of livelihood and disrupts the food and water supply for many indigenous communities. Many have been forced to move. The tribal groups' campaign against mining was galvanized by a massive mine waste spill in the central Philippines in 1996. To illustrate their point, four women led around two dozen others in having their heads shaved. SOUNDBITE: (Tagalog) "We shaved our heads because we want to send the message to our government that mining destroys the forest especially the mountains, and its the mountains that give life to us tribal people." SUPER CAPTION: Thelma Gapang, Bagobo tribe Chanting "stop illegal mining", the protesters gathered at the doorstep of the environment building - some holding photos to prove alleged harassment by mining companies and their security. In a statement, the Chamber of Mines said the demands of the protesters were only slogans, designed to obstruct an otherwise legitimate and environmentally responsible undertaking, with the social and economical benefits it brings. The chamber, an association of 25 exploration and mining companies, said destructive mining should be stopped but responsible mining should be encouraged. The chamber said current laws on mining were sufficient and in conjunction with strict monitoring, they ensure that the rights of indigenous peoples and the environment are protected.
